Do Solar Panels Work in Winter in Alberta?

When homeowners first consider solar, the same question always comes up:

“What happens during Alberta winters?”

With snow, cold temperatures, and shorter days, it’s easy to assume solar panels stop working.

They don’t.

In fact, solar works surprisingly well in Alberta.

Solar Panels Don’t Need Heat

A common myth is that solar panels need warm weather to generate electricity.

They don’t.

Solar panels produce power from sunlight, not temperature. Cold weather can actually help solar panels operate more efficiently compared to extremely hot climates.

That means Alberta’s cold winters aren’t a problem for solar production.

What Happens When It Snows?

Snow usually has very little impact on overall solar production.

Here’s why:

  • Solar panels are installed at an angle so snow slides off

  • Dark panel surfaces absorb sunlight and help melt snow

  • Wind often clears panels naturally

  • Most snow melts quickly once sunlight returns

Even in snowy climates, solar systems typically lose only a small percentage of yearly energy production due to snow.

Alberta Gets More Sun Than Most People Think

Many homeowners are surprised to learn that Alberta is actually one of the sunniest regions in Canada.

Edmonton receives roughly 2,300 hours of sunshine each year. Long summer days allow solar systems to generate a large portion of their yearly electricity during peak months.

This extra production helps balance lower winter output.

Solar Production Changes With the Seasons

Like any renewable energy source, solar output changes throughout the year.

Typical production pattern:

Season

Solar Production

Summer

Highest production

Spring / Fall

Moderate production

Winter

Lower production

The electricity produced during brighter months helps offset usage during winter through Alberta’s net metering system.

Why Many Alberta Homeowners Are Installing Solar

Despite cold winters, solar continues to grow quickly across Alberta because it can provide long-term benefits such as:

  • Lower long-term electricity costs

  • Protection from rising utility prices

  • Increased home value

  • Clean renewable energy

When designed properly, residential solar systems can generate electricity for 25 years or more.

Is Your Home a Good Candidate for Solar?

Not every roof is ideal for solar. Roof direction, shading, and electricity usage all play a role in determining whether solar makes financial sense.

At Stellar Upgrades, we help Alberta homeowners understand their potential solar production and long-term savings with a quick solar assessment.

If you're curious about solar for your home, learning your options can help you make a more informed decision.
